It’s Hugh and my last day in America for the next 5-6 months (or longer really, who knows.)
We’ve had a really good time in Chicago and New York, basically blowing pretty much the entire budget for Vietnam and Laos in just 2 weeks in America, but it was worth it.
We got our hair cuts, got our backpacks filled, maps, itineraries, plans and dreams and we’re heading off tomorrow (well, depending on how you judge time. I don’t consider 2:45am to be “tomorrow” if I haven’t gone to bed yet!)
We’ll be in Japan on the 5th (Japan time) and the trip officially starts on the 8th. Don’t ask me why Japan doesn’t count as part of our trip… okay fine, I’ll tell you why: Japan has always been sort of like a second home to me, lord knows I’ve spent more time there than anywhere else except Indianapolis. It ceased to be an exotic locale ages ago, which is sad, I suppose, but also nice to “come home” if you know what I mean.
Anyways, thanks to the people on LiveJournal who gave us scavenger hunt suggestions… they’re awesome and we’re doing all of them, except um, 2 =P

From trixadoodle:
Hope you two have a safe and wonderful trip!
p.s. I think you should rename your blog to “Janelle & Hugh’s Excellent Adventure”…but that’s just me.

This is a wonderful design for your blog. I see that neither of you drew it, but that’s okay; it still almost inspires in me a sense of wonder. Sadly, I have lost most of the sense of wonder that I once had, you know the kind you get when you’re walking atop a mountain in the brilliance of the first rays of sunshine, or ducking into a forest where the mists wrap themselves around all the secrets held therein, or when you’re fully engaged in a fantastical story and have just stepped out of the mundane world and into an exquisite new one. For me, that is what this design reminds me of.
Mmmm… I sure do miss dancing in the newness of a great adventure filled with hope. Why is it that the books of my childhood always seem so much more pungent and enticing than real life. I suppose it is the combination of fantasy and nostalgia, both fueled by unfulfilled inner desires: “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.” (C.S. Lewis) (Interesting words on that subject that puts things fairly well: http://theteemingbrain.wordpress.com/2006/10/16/autumn-longing-cs-lewis)
Bon voyage!
